The Standard

The Standard

We live in a day when most people hate having a standard to live by. The words from the book of Judges describe the times that we live in well.

Judges 21:25-" In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes."

A lot of people seem to only be interested in doing what is right in their own eyes. Their actions show that they reject the thought of God and reject any higher standard. The reality however is, whether you accept it or not there is a God and there is a higher standard.

2 Timothy 2:18-19 Says "Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

I love verse nineteen, even though there are those who have erred from the truth and are overthrowing the faith of others, the foundation of God standeth sure

Just because there were those rejecting the truth did not change the fact that it was truth. The truth is still the truth whether you accept it or not.

In Philippians 3:16 Paul tells Christians that we should "walk by the same rule". The word "rule" here is the Greek word "Kanon" and its the idea of a standard or boundary. All Christians everywhere should be walking by the same standard. This is why all Christians should be speaking the same thing(1 Cor. 1:10). We have the same standard and therefore should be speaking the exact same thing. We have a boundary as a Christian that we should not and cannot go beyond if we want to be pleasing in God's eyes.

What is this boundary?

1 Corinthians 4:6-"Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes; that in us ye might learn not to go beyond the things which are written; that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other. "(ASV)

The boundary is what is written. The inspired word of God(2 Tim. 3:16). If any man goes beyond this boundary or standard it is sin.

"Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip."(Hebrews 2:1).

In conclusion, man has a standard today and that is the God inspired scriptures found in the Bible. If any man choses not to follow the Standard, it will not change the fact that there is one and this man will most certainly wished he had on judgement day.

John 12:48-"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."
